| Bar U Ranch National Historic Site |
The ranching industry is a very significant part of Calgary’s history. Ranching is best observed at the 360-acre Bar U Ranch National Historic Site located near the base of the Rocky Mountains. The place has at least 35 structures that will showcase life in a ranch including barnyards, wagons drawn by horses, stables and other facilities needed to run a ranch.
They also offer live demos on how to make hay, branding as well as the proper way of roping. And if you get tied from all that ranching stuff then there is always a gift shop to feast your eyes on and a restaurant to satisfy your gastronomic urge.
The Bar U Ranch was among a small group of ranching corporations in Canada and was at its most active operations-wise from 1882 to 1950. The leaders of Canada’s ranching industry namely George Lane, Fred Stimson and Patrick Burns were the same people who spearheaded the Bar U Ranch.
This ranching facility was known as one of the best centers for breeding cattle as well as purebred horse. Majority of the large ranches closed their operations at the onset of the twentieth century. However the Bar U Ranch seems to be so resilient it still stands to this day.
