  • Customs Regulations

You don’t want to have trouble with Customs so declare everything you have in your possession when entering Canada. Among the items that can cause a lot of concern because they are possible disease carriers are meat products, plants and animals particularly birds.

Failure to declare such items can result to a penalty amounting to four hundred dollars or the possibility of prosecution. Plus, of course, there is the possibility of being banned from entering Canada.

But Canadian immigration rules are not so strict in the sense that they allow visitors to carry cheese that are not packaged in whey and only up to 20 kilograms per person; milk for babies that have been packaged commercially; vegetable seeds; cut flowers that are not intended for propagation; fresh fruits limited to 250 kilos per person; tea; coffee; baked goodies that do not contain meat; candies; fish except puffer fish; seafood except mitten crab; leather items and wood carvings but must be without bark and insects.

If you doubt the possibility of an item being allowed inside Canada then you must make a direct inquiry to avoid any delays when you are already in transit or have arrived in Canada.

Some tourists travel with their pet dogs. If you do then you are lucky because you can bring your pet with you provided you have a vaccination certificate issued by a veterinarian and written either in English or in French. The vaccination papers should certify that the dog has been given an anti-rabies vaccine and must contain information about the breed, weight and color of the dog. The certificate should identify the vaccine used, the serial number of the vaccine and its validity.

If you are bringing your dog with you to Canada for a special purpose like a guide for hearing or sight impaired people then they are not covered by importation restrictions provided that you are the person to be guided by the dog.

There are certain rules as regards the bringing of firearm to Canada. You can bring your firearm to Canada if you are over 18 years old. But take note of the kinds of firearms that are prohibited in Canada like replica firearms.

If you are going to Canada for a shooting competition then you can carry certain handguns including those that re included in the prohibited list such as the 32 caliber gun. Always make a written declaration if you are carrying a handgun to Canada. It is important to fill up and sign a declaration form because this will serve as your temporary license and registration certificate when you are in Canada.
